Antique HIMO - Boro Braided Cotton Scrap Rope 16 meters
Boro art object!
This extra long himo rope is made from endless bits of twisted cotton, and even a bit of silk in the mix. It is well used, and the whites are not white any longer. No doubt grime and sweat and the stains from endless countryside toil are part of this piece. But it is incredibly durable and strong, and has a small amount of give, as well. And it has been laundered, and smells fine.
early 20th century is my evaluation, looking at the fabrics used
Any old, ragged clothing and bedding fabrics were used to create these useful artifacts, and one could even buy the fabric from a rag merchant if you needed. These were used for everyday tasks in old Japan; tying things up, hauling things, and probably even horse or ox bridles.
This rope is well used, and it is fascinating to look at the variety of hand loomed and commercially produced cottons --and there are a few scraps of silk as well. Every bit is scrumptuous and full of stories, no doubt. Inspecting it spurs the imagination. Even the narrower chord used to gather and tie this into a skein-like loop is a handwoven kumihimo-style cotton chord. Like a flat lanyard weave.
The last photo is the place i found some silk.
The entire rope is 16 meters long, unusually long for these. It weighs about 582 grams.
