Deep Purple SHiBORI HAORI - Vintage Silk
This is a silk shibori haori. It most likely dates from the middle twentieth century. This type of shibori dyeing with tiny repeating circles is called kanoko shibori, or deer spot shibori, and the overall pattern which looks like vines is a classic japanese wander pattern called karakusa. Imagine binding an entire bolt of fabric in such a fine gauge pattern?? I think it would take me forever.
This haori has attached silk kumihimo ties to keep it closed when you need to. The kumihimo is artful, and obviously woven by hand. The time that goes into even just those ties is daunting!
There is a silk lining inside part of the haori, which you can see in the photos.
This could be worn over a kimono, as is intended. But it would also look stunning paired with your favorite outfit!! Even with jeans, a haori will change the entire ambiance to classic, yet bold!! The feel of the fabric is insanely luxurious and supple, with the raised texture from the shibori still remaining. It also smells great, a mixture of vintage book and delicate textile.

I see a few very slight stains on this piece, but they are hard to even see and locate. The last three photos show some of that.

Pull it apart and use the fabric in your own artistic creation? There is a lotta fabric there!! At least 8 meters. Lots of ways you could use this!!
